Secondary Containment Systems: Fuel Pad Containment
CONTAINMENT
PAD™

Tanker Truck on Containment Pad
Trilinear Walls Prevent Damage
Coupled to Form Large Surfaces
The Containment Pad is a heavy duty, drive on collector system designed to contain incidental spills of hazardous liquids. Because it is surface-mounted it will not crack like concrete systems. This fuel pad containment system is designed to stand alone or it can be coupled with additional Containment Pads to form larger configurations. When you need truck containment you can count on, look no further than the Polystar Containment Pad.
Each steel fuel containment pad is encapsulated in corrosion resistant fiberglass that is constructed from a 1/4" thick steel plate coated in a nominal 1/16" fiberglass lamination. Also included is a gel coat surface resin of equal chemical resistance with the additive antimony trioxide for flame retardant and U.V. protection.
"Low profile" Containment Pads offer a crack-free secondary containment surface that provides fuel pad containment for both large tanker trucks or low clearance passenger cars and fuel bowsers. Our Containment Pad “side walls” have a trilinear design. They are formed from an angular, composite, steel cored, heavy duty stealth shape that prevents damage when driven over by heavy vehicles. Our fuel pad containment is the toughest truck containment solution out there.
These systems are ideal for fuel pad containment and truck containment, i.e. service stations, and fill stands where a wide variety of vehicles might use the system. Incidental spills and drips are safely captured when these pads are used under generators, hydraulic mules, or other pieces of messy equipment. Keep in mind that our fuel pad containment system is modular in all sizes!
Each Containment Pad is equipped with one or more threaded drain ports. These ports can be equipped with ball valves or passive shut off filters that allow rainwater to drain, but close the port if hydrocarbons are released. Floor drains may also be installed if desired.
Limited site preparation, no excavation, fast and clean installation, immediate use, non-porous design, superior chemical resistance and portability are only some of the many advantages of the CONTAINMENT PAD. Polystar is proud to offer reliable truck containment solutions that help protect your business from damaging and expensive fuel spills.

SUMMARY: Non-porous, re-locatable, vehicle spill containment system that, using fiberglass composite materials, maximizes corrosion protection and strength.
Each Containment Pad™ System is manufactured from heavy-duty fiberglass laminations completely encapsulating a steel core. The steel core makes Containment Pad (and Tri-Star™) the most rugged and durable vehicular spill containment systems available today. Note that vehicles may traverse the Containment Pad System’s heavy duty steel walls without damage. In addition, each Containment Pad System includes (1) 1-1/2” (3.8cm) threaded coupling with a bronze ball valve for fluid drainage. The location of the drain port may be selected by the customer.
The Containment Pad System offers flexibility of size and wall height. Systems 6’ (1.83m), 12’ (3.66m), 14’ (4.26m) x 20’ (6.1m) and wider are routinely manufactured. System length is just as varied, with the desired length divide into the number of sections required for over-the-road shipping.
The standard thickness of the Containment Pad System’s steel core is 1/4” (6.0mm). However, optional 5/16” (8.0mm) thick steel is available at additional cost. Likewise, the standard wall height is 3-5/8” (9.2cm). However a height of 2” (5.1cm) or less is also available. Also, an optional filter box with peat filter may be purchased to allow rainwater to flow out of the system while capturing liquid hydrocarbons.
As the walls may be traversed by wheeled vehicles, typically ramps are not required. However, rugged, steel ramps are available as an option for applications which require an elongated sloped entrance. Typically, these ramps are quoted based on the customer’s requirement.
Installation is fast and easy. It is a matter of:
• Slip fitting and mechanically fastening the numbered sections together;
• Securing the guide post holders to the system and installing the guide posts;
• Securing the system to the substrate via the supplied hold downs.
Sectional joints are sealed with gasket and caulk sealant. Note that the Containment Pad System is surface-mounted, requiring no excavation and minimal site preparation.
Because the Containment Pad System is heavy-duty with a long life, sets up quickly, requires no excavation and is re-locatable, it is a fast cost-effective way to meet requirements for vehicular spill containment.

PURPOSE: The CONTAINMENT PAD is a super duty, rigid, drive on collector system designed to contain incidental spills of hazardous or corrosive liquids.
SCOPE: This product specification covers materials, construction and workmanship, physical properties, chemical resistance and methods of testing.
MATERIAL: The CONTAINMENT PAD is a fiberglass-encapsulated steel structure. Durable fiberglass laminations are bonded to a nominal 1/4” thick steel plate. Fiberglass offers great physical strength, excellent corrosion resistance and flexibility. Fiberglass mat and industrial grade isophthalic or vinyl ester resin as manufactured by Ashland Chemical or equivalent are used. A gelcoat surface resin of equal chemical resistance, with the additive antimony trioxide for flame retardance and U.V. protection is included. The flame spread rating is Class II. Tested by ASTM E-84.
STRUCTURE: CONTAINMENT PAD side walls are a tri-linear design. Steel angle is inverted and welded to the floor, making the walls into triangular tubes. This design prevents the side walls from being damaged when they are driven over during system entry or exit. The ability of a CONTAINMENT PAD to absorb high levels of static and dynamic loading provides positive assurance of spill containment. In addition, fiberglass provides the utmost in non-porous, corrosion protection against attack by a wide variety of industrial chemicals and liquid hydrocarbons.
Fiberglass reinforced construction is formed by combining resin with controlled amounts of fiberglass mat and woven roving. Polystar ensures that a corrosion barrier of not less that 30 mils as specified by industry standard PS 15-69 is provided to ensure consistency of product quality. The technical properties of a reinforced fiberglass laminate are:
Property at 73.4°F (23°C) |
1/8” to 1/4” Thickness |
Ultimate minimum tensile strength (PSI) |
9,000 |
Flexural minimum strength (PSI) |
16,000 |
Flexural minimum modules of elasticity (tangent, in PSI) |
700,000 |
OPERATING TEMPERATURE: The maximum operating temperature for fiberglass is 200F with excursions through 225F. Minimum operating temperature -60F.
QUALITY ASSURANCE: Each CONTAINMENT PAD is manufactured and tested according to industry standards PS 15-69 and 41-GP-22, Canadian and SPI/MTI Quality Assurance Report for FRP Corrosion Resistant Equipment.
WARRANTY: Each CONTAINMENT PAD is warranted against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase. Repair or replacement is at the discretion of the manufacturer. Customer or third party damage is excluded from warranty coverage.
